MICROPHONE
COMPARISON
A
comparison test between different class microphones has been
performed.
The
tested microphones are:
-
BRUEL & KJAER 4190 (very expensive)
- Sennheiser electret capsule KE-4 (around 50$, discontinued)
-
Panasonic electret capsule WM-61B (around 2$ or less)
An
open loudspeaker box with a fixed stand for the microphones
was used for the test:

The
B&K 4190 needs a power supply, provided by the manufacturer.
The Panasonic WM-61B capsule and the Sennheiser KE-4
capsule require a phantom voltage of 2-10 V. The phantom power
of 3.6 V supplied by our X4
was used.
The
Panasonic WM-61B capsule was tested in 2 different configurations:

and:

Here
are the Panasonic WM-61B specifications and frequency
response, provided by the manufacturer:

They
can be easily ordered at DigiKey,
part number P11974-ND or P9925-ND.
And
here are the results of the comparison!

The
frequency responses of the different microphones are quite similar!
Probably the B&K mic has better S/N ratio and better specifications,
but this test proves that the inexpensive Panasonic WM-61B
capsule is quite usable for acoustics measurements.
Here
follow 2 zoom images of the above plot:

The
measurements have been performed using a MOTU 896HD firewire
soundcard at 96 kHz sampling frequency.
